About Del Mar Thoroughbred Club
The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, "where the turf meets the surf", was built by celebrities Bing Crosby, Pat O'Brien and Jimmy Durante in Del Mar, California. In 1954, jockey William Lee Shoemaker wowed fans by winning 94 races in 41 days, a Del Mar record that has never been topped. In 1956, John Longden, with his victory in the Del Mar Handicap, became the world's winningest rider with 4,871st wins under his belt. In 1970, Shoemaker destroyed Longden's record with 6,033 wins.
